Why a billboard campaign about “Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake”?

Reagan Outdoor commissioned a marketing research project to test if a billboard campaign could increase the awareness of Jim Bridger discovering the Great Salt Lake.

The Awareness study works as follows:

Prior to Reagan posting billboards reading “Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake,” the research company surveyed the Wasatch front population to determine how many individuals knew that Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake. After the initial survey of the Wasatch front population, Reagan Outdoor posted billboards reading “Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake” in Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah counties for twenty-eight consecutive days.

The research company will survey the Wasatch Front population after the initial twenty-eight consecutive day billboard posting to determine if more people are able to recall the name of the explorer who discovered the Great Salt Lake. Reagan Outdoor will post a second 28-day consecutive billboard campaign reading “Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake”.

After the second billboard posting, the research company will conduct a second survey of the Wasatch Front population to determine how many more people are able to recall the name of the explorer who discovered the Great Salt Lake.

Redirect Research conducted a survey of 308 Utahns along the Wasatch front. In the survey the question was asked: “Do you know who discovered the Great Salt Lake?” 16.2% of the respondents had heard of Jim Bridger, however only about 3%, or three out of every one hundred respondents knew Jim Bridger was the first documented non-Native American to discover the Great Salt Lake.

In addition to the question of “Do you know who discovered the Great Salt Lake?” Foster Research asked the test question “Can you name the Lt. Governor of Utah?” Only 52.6% of the 308 surveyed were able to name Deidre Henderson as Utah’s Lt. Governor.

After the billboard campaign is posted for a total of 84 days, Redirect Research expects both the percentage of the Wasatch Front population to know the answer to “Who discovered the Great Salt Lake?”, to increase and the response to the name of the Lt. Governor “Deidre Henderson” to remain close to the initial response.
